Pursuing Excellence through the Sport of Rowing
Junior Rowing has a rich history at Minnesota Boat Club. Many members who have rowed at MBC for over 20 years, began as juniors with the club. Many alumni of the program continue to be involved in the sport within the region and country.
Joining the Team:
High school rowers are welcome to join the team at any point in the year. We offer group learn to row classes for juniors in the summer and the fall. Information can be found here.
The Junior Team practices year-round at the Minnesota Boat Club boathouse on Raspberry Island. During the school year, practices are held Monday through Friday 3:30-5:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00-11:00 am. During the summer, practices are held Monday through Friday 7:00-9:00 am and Saturdays from 9:00-11:00 am. Those participating in other sports for their schools are encouraged to join the team for the seasons they are able- MBC supports all of our multi-sport athletes.
The Junior team is led by Coach Jill Winegar. Jill has decades of experience as a fitness professional including group fitness, personal training, and Pilates. She began her coaching career as a Nordic ski coach with Mounds Park Academy and Minnehaha Academy as well as developing their strength and conditioning programs.
She started rowing seven years ago following the passion of her son Ryder who rowed with MRC juniors’ program. She quickly fell in love with the sport and knew she wanted to coach. She coached the novice and masters at MBC from 2016-2017 before going on to be the head novice coach for the University of Minnesota Men’s team. She is a Level II certified USRowing coach. Jill has many other certifications as a trainer and coach as she has pursued coaching as a lifelong career.
She loves to coach and introduce athletes to the lifelong sport of rowing. Jill is excited to be working with our junior team this year to both instill the love of the sport and the foundation of technique and racing.
Junior Rower Accomplishments:
Minnesota Boat Club Juniors have rowed at Pan Am Games, World Championships, National Championships, and the Olympics, among other major regattas. Juniors have gone on to row at dozens of colleges in the NCAA, IRA and ACRA rowing associations. Many of these Juniors pursing post-secondary rowing and education earned scholarships or had their admissions assisted by their rowing credentials. All of this has happened under the direct guidance of Miriam Baer.
